Welcome to the official setup manual for CTSC turnbuckle-tensioned zip line systems. Many classic CTSC backyard kits use a heavy-duty forged steel turnbuckle combined with galvanized wire rope clamps for tensioning. Follow this step-by-step guide to rig your cable safely, protect your trees, and achieve the perfect 3%–6% riding slope.

5-Step Turnbuckle Rigging Walkthrough
Step 1: Anchor Tree Selection & Tree Protection
Select two healthy, mature hardwood trees (Oak, Maple, Pine) with a minimum trunk diameter of 12 inches (30 cm) at rigging height. Wrap the CTSC tree protection pads around both trunks at the chosen heights to prevent the steel cable and turnbuckle sling from damaging tree bark.
Step 2: Install the Starting Sling & Extend the Turnbuckle
Secure the sling cable around the start tree over the tree pads. Attach the turnbuckle to the sling loop. Crucial Tip: Fully unscrew (open) the turnbuckle body to its maximum length before attaching the main cable so you have the entire travel length available for tensioning later.
Step 3: Thread the Spring Brake & Trolley
Before clamping the cable at the ending tree, slide the 5.9ft stainless steel spring brake onto the cable first, with its rubber bumper facing toward the trolley. Then thread the dual-bearing trolley onto the cable behind the brake.
Step 4: Cable Clamping ("Never Saddle a Dead Horse")
Wrap the main cable around the ending tree over the protective pads. Pull as much manual slack as possible. Secure the loop using three forged steel U-bolt wire rope clamps spaced 3 to 4 inches apart. Always remember the fundamental rigging rule: the saddle of the clamp must rest on the live load-bearing cable, and the U-bolt sits over the dead tail end.
Step 5: Turnbuckle Tensioning & Stress Testing
Insert a screwdriver or steel rod through the center of the turnbuckle body and rotate it to draw the threaded eye bolts together, pulling the cable taut. Aim for a 3% to 6% slope with approximately 2% sag when loaded. Before allowing children to ride, conduct a stress test by hanging a 250 lbs load (such as sandbags or an adult) from the trolley at mid-span.
